Sports that India have qualified for 2020 Olympic Games

Every event of the Olympic Games sees increased excitement, expectation, and participation by India. Here is a list of sports that India have already qualified for this year’s biggest sports event.


India will have four individual archery athletes to compete at Tokyo 2020, including Tarundeep Rai, Atanu Das and Pravin Jadhav competing in the men’s event and Deepika Kumari being the sole representative among the women.


India got the latest entrant for the 2020 Summer Olympics Games when Neeraj Chopra qualified in the javelin throw event for men.

Besides the 22-year-old, athletics will see two more Indian names, including Avinash Sable, who has qualified for the 3000m individual steeplechase and KT Irfan, who will be seen in the 20km individual racewalking.


Both the national hockey men’s and women’s teams have qualified for the 2020 Olympics. The men’s team won over Russia to confirm their tickets while the women dominated the US to secure their place.


Like archery, India will have at least four wrestlers at the 2020 Olympics. While Vinesh Phogat is going to take the mat in the women’s 53kg category, Bajrang Punia, Ravi Kumar Dahiya and Deepak Punia are expected to grapple in the 65kg, 57kg and 86kg respectively.


Equestrian will witness the first time of Indian participant in 20 years with Fouaad Mirza having qualified for the individual event category.


Shooters comprise India’s largest contingent at the 2020 Olympics, with as many as 15 contending for a variety of individual honors.

Besides the above disciplines and athletes who have confirmed their spots for India at the 2020 Olympics, there are some other sports in which some Indian names are yet to qualify but can have the chance to punch their tickets in the coming months. The sports are boxing, badminton, tennis, table tennis, and sailing.
