Bollywood in India puts out many movies every year, and they are starting to put out some blockbusters. The movies in India are not the big budget ones that are churned out in Hollywood, as their movies are much less expensive to make. Here are the top five grossing Bollywood movies of all time and their gross at the box office in dollars.
1. Dangal (2016) – $330 million
This movie is a sports biopic about India’s first female wrestling champions that were sisters and trained by their father. The family takes flak for wresting, which is a male-dominated sport and while the father, who was a wrestler himself, never won a medal his dreams were realized through his two daughters. Walt Disney Studios produced the movie, and it was their 4th highest grossing film of the year.
2 Baahubali: The Conclusion (2017) – $260 million
This movie ranks 2nd tall time in box office grosses for an Indian made movie, and it was a sequel. The movie directed by S.S. Rajamouli holds the record for the most expensive Bollywood movie ever made with a budget of $40 million. There is no plan in the works for a 3rd instalment of the film, but there is an animated series, which can be bought on Amazon Prime and there are rumours that it may continue as a television series.
3. Secret Superstar (2017) – $150 million
This is a feel-good movie where a young Muslim girl has big dreams of becoming a singer, but her father is dead set against the idea. She uploads her singing videos to YouTube and becomes famous overnight. Secret Superstar was one of the top Bollywood exports in China as well raking in a lot of dough in that market. Aamir Khan is one of the stars of the film, and he also took top billing on the 4th film on this list PK.
4. PK (2014) – $140 million
PK has an interesting premise about an alien that is stranded in the Rajasthan deserts. The film is listed as a comedy but touches on important issues of the day mainly religion and how it fits in the modern world. Various negative things when it comes to religion are seen through the alien’s eyes. PK was the very first Bollywood film that broke the $100 million mark at the box office.
5. Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) – $137 million
This movie is about an unlikely friendship between a devout Hindu and a child with speech problems and their journey. The Hindu, who lives in the area where the two make the journey to, is from India and the child from Pakistan and the film showed the bond between the two, despite being from countries where there is much tension. The movie is definitely one that tugs at the heartstrings and can bring tears, and the audiences and critics alike loved it.
